Rs100m Punjab grant for Hunza lake victims

HUNZA: Pakistan Muslim League-N chief Nawaz Sharif has urged the nation to help the people affected by the Hunza lake created by the Jan 4 landslide.During a visit on Monday to a camp of displaced people in Altit, he urged the government to take immediate steps to restore the Karakoram Highway to revive local economy.

In this connection, he said, help should be sought from China and Switzerland which had vast experience of dealing with such situations. Mr Sharif said private investors should be encouraged to run helicopter and ferry services for the stranded people of Gojal and for trade with China.More Infor | Feedback

PM announces relief package for Hunza

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani announced on Wednesday a compensation package for people affected by a lake formed by a landslide which blocked the Hunza River and damaged the Karakoram Highway.
Addressing a news conference here, the prime minister said the package was based on an assessment made by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) from May 19 to 25.

He said the federal government had taken several steps in collaboration with the Gilgit-Baltistan authorities to mitigate the suffering of the affected people.More Infor | Feedback

Hunza lake expected to spill by May 28

The Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Retired Lt General Nadeem Ahmed said water outflow from the Hunza lake is expected to spill over on May 28.

According to the National Disaster Management Authority, 2050 cusecs water is entering the lake due to melting glaciers while the water release is 197 cusecs.More Infor | Feedback

Water level in Attaabad lake 2 metres away from spillway

HUNZA: The water in the Ataabad Lake has risen and is just two metres away far from spillway and the water outflow from the lake is expected till 29 May. According to media reports, the officials of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said that the water outflow from the spillway would start soon and 312 families comprising of 42,000 affectees have been shifted to safe places.

PM allots Rs800m for Hunza affectees

HUNZA: Federal Minister Mian Manzoor Watoo said on Thursday that the prime minister has transferred Rs800 million to Gilgit-Baltistan.Wattoo said that the government of Gilgit-Baltistan is using the amount to aid those affected by the Attabad lake crisis.

Traffic at Karakoram Highway to suspend at 6 pm

GILGIT: DC Hunza Nagar, Zafar Waqar Taj said that traffic at the Karakoram Highway from Gilgit to Hunza will be suspended at 6 pm on Thursday (today) as water is expected to spill out this evening.

Nawaz, Shahbaz announce relief packages for Hunza Lake victims

GILGIT: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Monday visited Hunza and announced relief packages for victims of Attaabad Lake. Shahbaz Sharif announced Rs100 million for the victims of Attaabad Lake. Nawaz Sharif announced Rs500,000 for each family who lost their relatives in the disaster, saying the government should speed up IDPs rehabilitation process.

Relief Package for affected people of Hunza to be announced soon: PM

HUNZA/GILGIT: Assuring all support of the government to affected people of Hunza, Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has announced that incumbent democratic government of PPP would announce a relief package for the affected people.Addressing to affectees of Attaabad Lake here on Friday, the Prime Minister assured the people that once the package is finalized, it would be implemented immediately.

Seepage at the Attabad landslide

Focus have today kindly provided a new set of measurements of the state of the Attabad landslide. I will update the monitoring site shortly, but in the meantime here is the graph of the development of seepage.

The final spillway at the Attabad landslide

The GLOF into the lake behind the Attabad landslide yesterday appears to have raised the water level by something over two metres, in addition to the increase of about a metre from the normal inflow (please see the data on my monitoring site). The upshot is that the freeboard is likely be 4 metres or less. Inflow has increased substantially as well to about 93 cubic metres per second.
