The preservation of architectural heritage and other environmental assets restored in Hunza, Nagar and many areas of historic settlements are in the process of on going restoration. The restoration and reuse of the over 700 years old Baltit fort in 1996, also the Ganish khan has been completed.
Altit fort constructed eight hundred and fifty (850) years back by Hunza state.The people collected wooden material and other from far areas and work done in art and craft by themselves. It has three stories including watch tower at the top of fort with carved lintels, window frames in rooms, halls, balconies, and traditional houses around it. In front of the fort there is an apricot orchard, behind is a vertical about 300m drop to the river. Inside the fort area there is a tank, prayer halls and narrow streets between houses which were part of essentials.
In 13th century when Baltit fort was constructed the Mir of Hunza shifted there and Altit fort was used only during winters and later Mir’s family members.
